Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed Belarusians before the All Belarusian People’s Assembly (ABPA), which is convened by Lukashenko. It is scheduled for 11–12 February 2021 and will not consist of representatives of the people, but of government officials and ideologists. Some delegates learned about their participation only from the media, since no one asked for their consent to participate in the assembly.

At the same time, Lukashenko declares: “The meeting is a direct consultation with the people.”

However, 2,700 participants are not an approved number of Belarusians who can make decisions of national importance. This is the number of seats in the Palace of the Republic, the building where this assembly is to take place.

The US Embassy in Belarus published a statement on its website, in which they called the ABPA an illegitimate conference and urged the authorities to start a real dialogue.

2,700 people at the ABPA are just officials and ideologists. It is a selected audience that won’t tell him “go away.” He cannot speak in front of real people. He has never done this since that very trip to the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant on 17 August. He cannot go out into the street now. And people will come out. Because no one wants to hear about five-year plans, collective farms, state farms [the legacy of the Soviet system]. Because we want to build our future, and he wants to “maintain food security”, said Ms. Tsikhanouskaya.
