Protests against the rigged presidential election results in Belarus began on the evening of 9 August and have been going on for 32 days. Inexplicable brutality of the riot police, brave Belarusian women, and 200,000 demonstrators near Lukashenko’s residence. What else is this month most remembered for? Minsk, Belarus. 12 August 2020. After the brutal suppression of protests on 9-11 August, chains of solidarity were formed in different cities of Belarus on 12 and 13 August. They consisted mainly of women dressed in white with flowers in their hands. This was how they protested against the violence of the riot police. At that time, the women were not detained en masse.

15 August 2020. Paying last respects to the late Aliaksandr Taraikouski, who was killed on 10 August in Minsk. According to video sources, 34-year-old Aliaksandr Taraikouski was shot dead on the spot. The Ministry of Internal Affairs officially claimed that an unknown object had exploded in his hands.

On 18 August, Catholic Archbishop of Minsk and Mogilev Tadeusz Kandrusiewicz appealed to Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Karayeu regarding people who were detained during protests. On 31 August, he was denied entry into Belarus without explanation.

People demanded the resignation of Alexander Lukashenko. The strikes were announced by employees of the Belarusian Automobile Plant, Minsk Automobile Plant, Minsk Tractor Plant, Belmedpreparaty and Belkard enterprises, Hrodna plants Terrasit, Hrodna-Azot, etc.

They protested against election fraud and the violence of the security forces, and they called for the release of all political prisoners. Moreover, they prepared very beautiful posters.

Minsk, Belarus. 21 August 2020. The “Chain of Repentance”. Participants stood in a line stretching between the detention center on Akrescina Street and the site of mass graves of victims of Stalinist repressions in Kurapaty. More than ten thousand people took part in the demonstration and the length of the chain exceeded 10 kilometers.

Minsk, Belarus. 18 August 2020. Dozens of people with red and white balloons gathered near the pre-trial detention center No. 1 on Valadarskaha Street. An unregistered presidential candidate of Belarus, Siarhei Tsikhanouski, is detained there. It was his birthday – he had turned 42 that day.
