In spite of Lukashenko’s precarious position, the dictator’s rhetoric remains aggressive and aimed at intimidation. In an address to representatives of military and security agencies on 30 October 2020, Lukashenko said that he is “not taking prisoners” anymore and noted, “If anyone touches a member of the military, they must end up without their hands at the very least.” Lukashenko’s main goal is to stifle the protests at any cost. This is the reason why he will stop at nothing, fully understanding that there is no turning back for him. However his threats are not effective anymore and Belarusians keep on defying the authoritarian regime.
