113 days of protests: Belarusians used tactics of disinformation against law enforcement officials
Over ten marches of several tens of thousands of people each took place in Minsk. Like last Sunday, the march was held in every district of the city. Despite the bad weather, Internet problems and the subway shutdown, Belarusians continue to express their protest. A new strategy of protesters – to gather not in one single march, but to distribute among Minsk districts – has shown its effectiveness for the second time. The authorities did not have enough resources to take all the people gathering in different places. The protesters also used a new tactic to misinform the chasteners. People recorded in advance and posted in chats videos about the gathering place, so that when the security forces came to a designated place, the protesters were no longer there. Nevertheless, in places where people were present, the police used stun grenades, sprayed gas in the protesters’ faces and shot them with rubber bullets. But even after that, people did not run away.
Protest marches were also held in Brest, Hrodna, Homel, Mahiliou, Vitsebsk, Zhodzina, Smaliavichy, Iuie, Dziarzhynsk, Barauliany, Radashkovichy, Liakhavichy and other cities and towns. The actions were followed by a crackdown on demonstrations and arrests.
At least 416 protesters were arrested. It is reported that about 10 people from various police departments were taken to hospitals by ambulances. Among those arrested were Dzmitry Kruk, a member of the Coordination Council and a well-known economist, Volha Smalianka, the director of a human rights organization Lawtrend, Iryada Misko, a 75 year old PhD in Agriculture, and actress Alena Hironak.
Solidarity actions were also held all over the world. Such support is very important for Belarusians. Belarusian diasporas of Australia, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Poland, Scotland, the United States, Russia, Ukraine and other countries express their solidarity calling for an end to violence in the center of Europe.
The Telegraph urges the British authorities to check the links between Russian oligarch Gutseriyev and Lukashenko
One of the most popular and influential newspapers in the United Kingdom, The Telegraph, urged the British government to check the connections between Alexander Lukashenko and billionaire Mikhail Gutseriyev, as well as his activities in Great Britain.
The publication provides information about the Gutseriyev family’s assets in Great Britain. In particular, it refers to the company GCM Global Energy PLC, in which Mikhail and his son Said Gutseriyev have a controlling stake. GCM Global has a number of interests in Belarus, including a deal on a potash plant worth 1 billion pounds sterling, which is due to open next year.
The Telegraph also reminds that Gutseriyev is the Chairman of the Board of “RussNeft”. This is one of the largest oil companies in Russia, which has become the only Russian oil supplier to Belarus. Currency.com, a cryptocurrency exchange company founded by Said Gutseriyev, is also based in Minsk.
In Belarus, Gutseriyev owns IT companies, hotel “Renaissance”, a business center, an airport business aviation terminal and an elite entertainment complex. Russian propagandists from the RT channel stayed at the hotel “Renaissance”.
British media especially emphasize that Mikhail Gutseriyev attended the secret inauguration of Lukashenko. Alexander Lukashenko calls Gutseriyev “my friend Misha”.
Neither the EU nor the US recognized the election results, and British Foreign Secretary Dominique Raab called falsification of voting results “disgusting”.
The Telegraph appealed to the Gutseriyevs’ family for comments, but a representative “Safmar” refused to provide any information at the weekend, offering an official response on Monday.
Inscription “We will not forgive” appeared on a new house of Dmitri Baskov, who presumably participated in the beating of Raman Bandarenka
Recently, the family of the infamous Dmitri Baskov, chairman of the Hockey Federation of Belarus and personal hockey coach of Lukashenko’s son bought a chic house near Minsk in English style. Tonight, a huge inscription “We will not forgive” appeared on it.
Interestingly, the house was put up for sale for more than 1,1 million USD, while for Baskov the cost was about 680 thousand BYN (263 thousand USD). According to sources of Motolko Help Telegram channel, on 11 November 2020, Baskov requested and received a loan from Belarusbank for the purchase of the real estate of 550 thousand BYN (212 thousand USD) for 20 years at 13.35% per annum, whereas Belarusbank officially suspended loans for the purchase of real estate from 1 May 2020.
A man resembling Baskov was seen at the Square of Changes during the beating of Raman Bandarenka, who then ended up in the hospital, where he died. Soon after that, audio recordings with a voice similar to Baskov’s voice appeared on the Internet.
