“The highest form of deception of people and a travesty of democracy”: authorities convene the All-Belarusian Assembly, opposition considers its participants criminals

The sixth All-Belarusian People’s Assembly will be held on 11-12 February. Approximately 2,700 specially selected people from across the country will gather in the capital to discuss plans for socio-economic and socio-political development for the next five years. This is the official information. At the same time, it has not been reported whether an ordinary citizen can become a member of the assembly and participate and how.

In 2010, the opposition, represented by the poet and ex-presidential candidate Uladzimir Niakliayeu, tried to get into this forum, even collecting 25,000 signatures of citizens. But the attempt was unsuccessful.

The National Anti-Crisis Management insists that the participants of the 6th All-Belarusian Assembly must be included in the Unified Crime Registry. According to the National Anti-Crisis Management, the All-Belarusian Assembly is “the highest form of deception of people and a travesty of democracy” and “everyone should be held responsible for being complicit in legitimizing the regime’s crimes.”

Former Minister of Internal Affairs Karaieu on Tsikhanouski: “Such scum is the most dangerous of all”

The BYPOL initiative has published materials related to the detention of presidential candidate and current political prisoner Siarhei Tsikhanouski. Among other things, there is an audio recording of a man with a voice resembling that of the ex-Minister of Internal Affairs, Yury Karaieu, saying: “Such scum is the most dangerous of all. He is more dangerous than all these Babarykas. He is the destroyer of the state. There is no crime we can charge him with – we need to invent one and jail him for a long time. Let him stay there! Let him croak there!”

Tsikhanouski is not mentioned by name in the recording. However, the words “he, this scum, has seen much worse things in Russia” (it is a known fact that Tsikhanouski used to work in Russia) and “he returned and started saying things like ‘We will shake this government’” allow us to assume that the subject of the conversation was Siarhei Tsikhanouski.

Courts continue to hand out outlandish fines and prison terms to everyone

Today saw several such decisions.

A resident of Maladzechna was sentenced to a year and a half of probation and a fine of approximately 700 euros for insulting a police officer.

Katsiaryna Liavonava, a mother of many children, was fined 180 euros by the Mazyr court for walking with a stroller and allegedly participating in a protest. “The police woke and scared my child with their megaphone. I commented on it.” Katsiaryna is sure that it was her argument with the police that lead to the punishment.

A 25-year-old resident of the town of Brahin was sentenced to 2 years in a penal colony for insulting Lukashenko – on 16 August, he spoke negatively about Lukashenko while drunk. Police officers recorded this.

In Minsk, a court sentenced a man who blocked a road in the capital on the night of 10 August to 3 years of probation.

Two political prisoners were sentenced in Navahrudak. Dzianis Kireshchanka was sentenced to a penal colony for 1 year and 6 months, and Uladzimir Harokh was given 7 years in a maximum security penal colony. The men were accused of planning riots, with Uladzimir also being accused of publicly insulting the president.
